Film Review Of 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi'
Get the inside scoop on the latest "Star Wars" movie before it hits theaters and see what's in store for Rey and the Resistance.
On Dec. 9, Rian Johnson's “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” had its amazing world premiere in Hollywood, and while the evening's lineup of celebrities (think: Daisy Ridley, Laura Dern and Mark Hamill) was dazzling to say the least, the film itself was equally as impressive.
The most recent installment of the "Star Wars" saga is an exciting space adventure with engaging characters, splendid performances and captivating screenplay, all set to the backdrop of John Williams’ masterful score. Much like the rest of the franchise, universal themes of good versus evil remain the focus, while undertones of relationships, loyalty and perseverance are also explored.
While we don't want to reveal too much about the movie (because no one likes spoilers), there are plenty of details that are worth mentioning ahead of its theatrical opening on Friday, Dec 15.

Picking up where 2015's “Star Wars: The Force Awakens" left off, "The Last Jedi" opens with a gripping aerial battle scene that sets up Rey’s (Ridley) strong desire to train with the legendary Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) to learn the path of the Jedi. Their first coaching session lays the groundwork for the film’s thrilling storyline.
“Breathe. Just breathe. Now, reach out. What do you see?” Luke Skywalker asks Rey.

As Rey focuses, closing her eyes intently, she responds that she sees “Light. Darkness. And something else. It’s calling me.” At this instant, Rey sees glimpses of sorrow and sadness deep in her thoughts.
“Between good and bad. Between light and darkness, there is balance,” Luke emphatically chimes in to guide her. But suddenly, Rey’s heartbeat palpitates as she sees more darkness, as Luke says, “Resist it, Rey! Resist it.”
Rey finally gains control of herself telling Luke exactly the future world she sees.

As Rey continues her journey, a looming standoff occurs between the Resistance and the evil empire of the First Order, led by the detestable and disfigured Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis). Audiences will also learn about the unwavering commitment of First Order General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson), the whereabouts of rebel stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega) and the intensity of Resistance pilot Poe (Oscar Isaac).
Adam Driver reprises his role as Kylo Ren, acting as the film’s emotional center. Meanwhile, "Star Wars" newcomers Laura Dern and Kelly Marie Tran are delightful in their roles as fearless Resistance Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo and Resistance maintenance worker Rose Tico, respectively.
The end of the film pays tribute to the late Carrie Fisher — who returned to the series as the gallant General Leia before her death — with a tearful goodbye to Princess Leia forever.
If you’re still wondering whether Rey sees a future world with Luke in it, sorry — we're not going to spoil that for you. What we can say is that fans will not be disappointed by the film's lightsaber fights. Ridley shows her impeccable talent and intense gusto during battle scenes.
All in all, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is full of surprises. It is well-balanced, witty, and highly enjoyable. Is it the best of the bunch? The answer is a resonating and roaring yes!
