Health Officials Say Texas Man Died of West Nile Virus

A man in his 80s is the first known confirmed death in Dallas from the West Nile virus this year.

An official with the Dallas County Health and Human Services has confirmed the death of a local resident in his 80s from West Nile virus.

It’s the first death in Dallas from the virus this year, NBC Dallas-Fort Worth’s Channel 5 reported on Tuesday. There have been seven confirmed cases of the virus in Dallas this year.

The patient lived in the 75214 zip code in northwest Dallas. Health officials said he also had underlying conditions when he was diagnosed with the virus.

“Right now we want everybody to understand this is the peak period and we’re not ready to declare that West Nile season is over. We want everyone to continue using mosquito repellent,” said Zach Thompson, director of Dallas County Health and Human Services.
