Hurricane Irma Closes In • DACA Under Threat • Texas Needs $180 Billion: Patch Morning Briefing

Good morning! It's Tuesday, and we hope you had a great Labor Day. Here's what you need to know to start your day.

Hurricane Irma Closes In

Even as the country continues to grapple with the devastation wrought by Hurricane Harvey, a new danger is creeping up toward the southern coast threatening to wreak more havoc. Hurricane Irma, now a Category 5 storm, threatens Florida, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and other Caribbean nations, though its path is uncertain. Puerto Rico and Florida have already declared states of emergency in the wake of the coming storm, which could hit the mainland later in the week. Some fear Irma could turn toward Texas, where many cities and homes would struggle to cope with additional flooding. (Patch)

DACA On The Chopping Block

Attorney General Jeff Sessions will hold a press conference late Tuesday morning to discuss President Donald Trump's plans for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, a policy that extended protections to undocumented immigrants who were brought to the country as minors. According to Politico, Trump plans to end the Obama-era program, and the White House plans to delay enforcing the action by six months — but exactly what this means for those currently protected by the policy is unclear. Watch the announcement live. (Patch)

Texas Will Need Up To $180B In Federal Aid To Rebuild, Governor Says

President Trump is asking Congress to allocate just less than $8 billion to Hurricane Harvey relief this month to get the work started on recovery efforts, but officials believe locals will need much more funding in the long term. Gov. Greg Abbott has estimated Texas will require up to $180 billion in federal aid to rebuild communities devastated by Hurricane Harvey. Abbott noted the scope of destruction by Hurricane Harvey and its subsequent tropical storm iteration is larger than that of Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which required federal outlays of a combined $170 billion.
