Inside The Winchester Mansion: The Most Haunted House In History

If you're a fan of horror films, chances are you've already heard the buzz surrounding "Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built." The haunting drama stars Oscar-winner Helen Mirren as firearms heiress Sarah Winchester, who throws herself into a round-the-clock remodel of an enormous mansion that she believes to be haunted by hundreds of vengeful ghosts.

But what you might not know is that the film's terrifying mansion is a real place. A California Historic State Landmark, the house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is known as the most haunted house in history.

Construction on the Winchester mansion began in 1884 on an isolated stretch of land 50 miles outside of San Francisco and continued until 1922. After the sudden deaths of her husband and child, Sarah Winchester spent $5 million to transform the original farm house into an unusual labyrinth-mansion in an attempt to prevent evil spirits from harming anyone else. Her decades of constant work resulted in an enormous estate with 160 rooms, 2,000 doors, 10,000 windows, 9 kitchens, 13 bathrooms and 47 stairways.

Surprisingly, no film has ever been made about the eerie mansion, until now. Fans of the Winchester house will soon be able to see its origin story unfold on the big screen. Directed by siblings Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig, “Winchester” also stars Jason Clarke, Sarah Snook and Angus Sampson. The CBS Films release hits theaters on Feb. 23, 2018.
