If You’re Among Millions Who Own These Car Brands, You May Get A $6,350 Direct Deposit
Lawsuit alleged fuel pumps on some vehicles disintegrated, sending metal shards into the fuel system, causing "catastrophic engine failure."
Millions of owners of two of Chevrolet and General Motors’ most popular pickup trucks may get a direct deposit of up to $12,700 in a historic $35 million settlement of a class action lawsuit — but there’s a catch.
The settlement is for owners of certain Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra diesel pickups equipped with 6.6L Duramax engines and Bosch “CP4” high-pressure diesel fuel pumps.
Here’s the catch: Only those who bought their trucks from a dealer in seven states — California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, New York, Pennsylvania, or Texas — between March 1, 2010, through Sept. 13, 2024, are eligible for the settlement. Lawyers’ attempts to certify five other states for the class were denied.

The lawsuit alleged the fuel pump “has a fragile and unstable design, which causes metal parts to rub against each other, creating metal shavings that contaminate the fuel system, which can cause catastrophic engine failure while the vehicle is in motion.” Repairs cost around $12,000.
General Motors denied wrongdoing as part of the settlement agreement but said it decided to settle to avoid the “costs, risk, and delays associated with further litigation.”

About $30 million of the settlement will go to current owners of the vehicles who paid out-of-pocket for a CP4 fuel pump repair that wasn’t covered by warranty. Depending on the number of claims filed, payments could range from $400 to a high of $12,712, with an expected average payment of $6,356.
The remaining $5 million will go to class members who no longer own their trucks or didn’t pay out-of-pocket for a CP4 repair. These people can expect direct deposits ranging from $400 to $800, but the exact amount depends on how many people file claims.
Also, according to the settlement terms, owners of the affected trucks who haven’t yet experienced fuel pump failures may receive up to 50 percent reimbursement on the cost of future repairs.
To see if you’re eligible, check your Vehicle Identification Number on the VIN lookup page. If so, follow the steps on the claim form, which is found on the GM Fuel Pump Settlement page. More information is found in the FAQ section.
The deadline to file claims could be as early as July 21, 2025.
