KEYSTONE, SD — President Donald Trump was set to attend a special Fourth of July 4 fireworks extravaganza Friday night in the shadow of Mount Rushmore but social distancing was not expected to be part of the festivities.

The event will feature a military flyover as fireworks light up the sky above the 60-foot sculptures of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt for the first time in a decade.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial was closed to the public Friday as the park planned to welcome 7,500 ticket holders who will be offered free masks when they enter to watch the nighttime spectacle.

While South Dakota has seen declining rates of new cases and new hospitalizations from the coronavirus, public health experts say the lack of social distancing and enforced mask wearing at Friday's event could lead to a surge. Others fear the fireworks could touch off a forest fire.

President Trump blamed the recent rise in coronavirus cases in parts of the United States to increased testing.

"There is a rise in coronavirus cases because our testing is so massive and so good, far bigger and better than any other country. This is great news, but even better news is that death, and the death rate, is down," the president tweeted. "Also, younger people, who get better much easier and faster."
