Coach English of George Mason Hosts Coaches vs. Cancer Game January 29
Purple Strategies Steve McMahon teams up with American Cancer Society and Coach English to encourage fans to return to cancer screenings
Coach Kim English will sport a suit with sneakers for his team’s Sunday, January 29, 2023, game during Coaches vs. Cancer Suits And Sneakers ® Week, which runs Jan. 23-29. Coaches vs. Cancer (CvC) is a nationwide movement created 30 years ago that unites coaches across the country to raise funds and awareness about the fight against cancer and promote the American Cancer Society (ACS) as a source of inspiration and hope for those facing cancer. While coaching games during the week, coaches wear sneakers with their game attire as a visible reminder of their support of ACS. Coaches are also encouraging fans to return to screening by going to coaches.cancer.org, where they can find cancer screening info. They may also donate to their coach’s campaign against cancer at www.setthescreen.org (click donate and choose George Mason). That’s a slam dunk!
Purple Strategies CEO Steve McMahon co-leads George Mason’s Coaches vs. Cancer with Coach English to encourage fans to return to recommended cancer screening and donate to the fight against cancer. Since COVID-19, screening rates are still 25% below average. See coaches.cancer.org to find a screening site near you.
WHEN & George Mason Patriots vs. St. Joseph’s Hawks game, Sunday Jan 29, 12noon
WHERE: EagleBank Arena on the Fairfax campus of George Mason University, six miles West of the Capital Beltway, just off Braddock Road, Route 620.
The COVID-19 pandemic presented a unique set of challenges for cancer patients and survivors who had to pause their treatments and screening protocols. At one point, cancer screenings dropped by 94%. Coaches participating in Suits And Sneakers Week help raise visibility to support the American Cancer Society’s work to help cancer patients and survivors safely resume treatments and screenings and contribute in a meaningful way to the mission to end cancer.

The CvC program is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches that has raised more than $125 million in the fight against cancer thanks to the incredible effort of thousands of coaches across the entire college basketball landscape. The program empowers basketball and other athletic coaches to save lives from cancer by leveraging their community leadership to raise awareness and funds for ACS.
The CvC program was inspired by former University of Missouri head coach and cancer survivor Norm Stewart when he challenged fans to pledge a dollar amount for every 3-point shot made by his team during the 1991-1992 season.
