Worried about how to keep your plants alive and healthy during the winter months? Head on over to Prior Unity Garden, 3017 James St. in Fairfax, this Tuesday night for a class on Overwintering Crops, from 6-7:30 p.m. You’ll learn about crops and varieties that can overwinter, winter and early spring harvesting, storage and succession planting of early spring crops, and more. RSVP-Northern Virginia is looking for local volunteers. RSVP engages persons 55 and older in volunteer service to meet critical community needs while providing a high-quality experience that will enrich the lives of the volunteers. RSVP recruits volunteers, assesses their availability and skills, and then matches their interests, skills and experience with the best volunteer placement. As an added benefit to volunteers, RSVP members are eligible to receive mileage and meal reimbursement, supplemental insurance while serving, and there are ongoing group service and recognition events. Coming up soon, over the weekend of Nov. 2 and 3, downtown Fairfax City will play host to Artists for Autism, in which talented musicians from across the globe will gather at the Auld Shebeen, 3971 Chain Bridge Road in Old Town, for an intimate fundraising concert. Organizers – who are all volunteers from the nonprofit organization Only About the Music (OATM) – promise a unique experience in which each artist performs for a whole hour, followed by meet-and-greet sessions and photo-ops with the artists. All proceeds benefit educational tools and assistance for families affected by autism, through their partner, the Grafton Integrated Health Network. Looking for a way to give back? Fairfax County very much needs respite care volunteers. These volunteers would help care for disabled or home-bound residents, to help give a break to their family members or full-time caregivers.
