Local Team Wins Babe Ruth State Championships, Volunteers Needed to Drive Elderly and More

1. A big congratulations to the Northern Fairfax County Knights baseball team! On Monday, they won the Babe Ruth Virginia State Championships in the 14-year-old division. Next, they are headed to Ocala, Fla. for the Babe Ruth Southeast Regional Tournament, which begins on Aug. 1. Team members said, they could use all the help they can get to raise the needed money to get to Ocala, so anyone who is interested in sponsoring the team should contact Shawn Boynton at shawn.boynton@verizon.net.

2. Have a child ages 7-14 who can use some exercise and entertainment? How about summer basketball camp? Mark Vincent’s Instructional Basketball Camp for boys and girls will be hosting a session at Frost Middle School in Fairfax the week of Aug. 5. The instructional and skill-based camp features guest speakers, camp shirts, written evaluations, lectures and demonstrations of offensive and defensive strategies, a daily competition, awards, and three-on-three and, and five-on-five league play. Campers are grouped by age and skill level. Boys and girls are grouped separately. Camp days are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The week costs $189.00 for Fairfax County residents and $204.00 for out-of-county residents. For more information, visit the County’s website.

3. Looking for a way to give back? Fairfax County needs volunteers to drive elderly local residents to medical appointments and wellness programs.
