Public Invited to Library Trustees Meeting Wednesday, Paul VI Runfest 5k Race Sunday, and More

If proposed changes to the Fairfax County Public Library system have you concerned, the public is invited to this month’s meeting of the Fairfax County Public Library Board of Trustees this Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at the George Mason Regional Library, 7001 Little River Turnpike in Annandale. Proposed changes that trustees have tossed around lately include cutting the number of staffers, and making a master’s degree in library sciences a preferred option instead of mandatory for librarians. A pilot test of the new system could soon be implemented in the Burke Centre and Reston libraries. Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chair Sharon Bulova has encouraged members of the public to attend this week’s meeting and share their thoughts and ideas. Those wishing to speak must register their names in advance with the Library Administrative Office at 703-324-3100.

Lace up those running shoes! This Sunday, Sept. 15 is the annual Paul VI Runfest 5k Race. This year’s race will continue the Runfest tradition of raising funds for Paul VI Catholic High School's nationally recognized Options Program for students with intellectual disabilities, as well as the PVI cross-country and track programs. The 5K course is a certified, two-loop route with a few gentle hills that starts and finishes in the PVI parking lot behind the school at 10675 Fairfax Boulevard. There will be prizes for the top finishers as well as randomly-drawn prizes for all runners. All race registrations submitted before race day can be submitted online here. The entry fee for PVI students and faculty is $15, and $25 for all others. Registration at the race on race day is $35 for everyone. Interested in learning how to defend yourself? Starting this week, First Defense will begin offering self-defense and fitness classes for all ages at the Sherwood Community Center in Fairfax City. Classes will be offered on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Mondays, krav maga will be offered from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, a host of different classes will be offered – a Youth Anti-Bullying Course from 5:30-6:15 p.m., krav maga from 6:30-7:30 p.m., and body weight conditioning from 7:30-8:15 p.m. For more information including price and how to sign up, see First Defense’s event listing here on Patch.
