VA Congressman To Retire As Cancer Returns Following Treatment
U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-11th), who was treated for cancer, said the disease has returned and he will not seek reelection in 2026.

FAIRFAX, VA — U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Fairfax) said his cancer has returned despite treatment, so will not seek reelection in 2026, according to a statement posted Monday morning on social media.
Last November, Connolly revealed that he'd been diagnosed with esophageal cancer and would immediately begin chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
"After grueling treatments, we've learned that the cancer, while initially beaten back, has now returned," Connolly said, on Monday. "I'll do everything possible to continue to represent you and thank you for your grace."

Connolly, 75, was first elected in 2008 to represent Virginia's 11th District in U.S. House of Representatives. Prior to that, he served as the Providence District supervisor and was later elected to chair the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.
He will step back from his position as ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, but the sun is setting on his time in public service, Connolly said Monday.

"With no rancor and a full heart, I move into this final chapter full of pride in what we've accomplished together over 30 years," he said. "My loving family and staff sustain me. "My extended family — you all have been a joy to service."
U.S. Rep. Don Beyer (D-8th) said on Monday that Northern Virginia was a better place because of Connolly's decision to enter public service.
“He has left an indelible mark on Fairfax County, our region, our Commonwealth, and our country as a tireless advocate for our federal workforce, the U.S. Postal Service, and our public transit system," Beyer said. "He served his constituents faithfully, was a vigorous fighter for government reform, and remains one of the most effective legislators in either party.
“I cannot imagine the House without Gerry. We have been friends for many years, but for the past decade our partnership was an essential starting point from which so much important work followed. I deeply respect Gerry’s decision to put his constituents first by stepping back, but I will miss him terribly in Congress. Megan and I send our love to Gerry, Smitty, and the Connolly family, with thanks for years of friendship and a great career, and our best hopes for the future.”
Virginia’s two U.S. senators released statements following Connolly’s announcement:
“For decades, my friend Gerry Connolly has shown Virginia and the country how to fight for what is right—and no one has fought harder,” said Sen. Tim Kaine (D). “ I’m deeply moved by the way he has brought that same courage to his fight against cancer, and will do all I can to support him and his family.”
“Throughout his career, Gerry Connolly has exemplified the very best of public service — fiercely intelligent, deeply principled, and relentlessly committed to the people of Northern Virginia and our nation,” Sen. Mark Warner (D). “Whether it’s standing up for federal workers, advocating for good governance, or now confronting cancer with the same resilience and grit that have defined his life of public service, Gerry is one of the toughest fighters I know. I have no doubt that Gerry will continue to fight — for his health, for his community, and for the causes he believes in.
“I am proud to call Gerry a friend. Lisa and I are keeping him in our hearts and prayers, and we stand with him every step of the way.”
Jeff McKay, who is the current chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, submitted the following statement on Monday:
“I have great respect for Congressman Gerry Connolly’s decision and admire his strength in prioritizing his health while continuing to focus on how he can best serve. Gerry has been a good friend of mine for many years, and I’ve seen firsthand his dedication as a public servant and tireless advocate for Fairfax County. His leadership on issues ranging from affordable housing to environmental protection has made a lasting impact on our community and beyond. His work has set a standard we all admire. My thoughts are with him and his family during this difficult time. I join so many others in Fairfax County and across the country in sending him support, encouragement, and best wishes for a full and swift recovery.”
Braddock District Supervisor James Walkinshaw said in a statement in response to Connolly's decision that he was key to passage of the Affordable Care Act, and has more recently fought against the Trump Administration.
"Congressman Connolly is a giant and his impact on Fairfax County, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and our nation is immeasurable. From civic leader, to the Board of Supervisors, to Congress and the Presidency of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, he has led with integrity, intellect, and energy.
"His work has touched every corner of our community – the Oakton Library, the Mosaic District, Metro’s Silver Line, and the Gerry Connolly Cross County Trail. Throughout his career, he’s taken on the tough fights and never hesitated to do what’s right for the people he represents, even in the face of intense political pressure.
"But first and foremost for me, he is a dear friend and mentor who I love deeply," Walkinshaw said. "Gerry Connolly changed my life — and he changed the lives of countless others through his leadership, his compassion, and his fierce love for this community."
Fairfax County School Board Chairman Karl Frisch, who represents the Providence District, shared the following remarks by email:
“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Congressman Gerry Connolly for his decades of dedicated public service. His steadfast advocacy for public education has left an indelible mark on our community. From his tenure and leadership on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to his subsequent leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives, he has consistently championed efforts to strengthen our schools and support students, educators, and families. His unwavering commitment to public education and effective governance will remain a lasting legacy, inspiring all of us who serve our community.”
