Shot Fired, Suspect Arrested After Fleeing Fairfax City Traffic Stop

A shot was fired as police tackled and arrested a 16-year-old they say fled from a traffic stop in Fairfax City early Tuesday morning.

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — A shot was fired and a 16-year-old boy who police say fled from a traffic stop in Fairfax City was arrested early Tuesday morning, according to authorities.

About 12:43 a.m., Virginia State Police were alerted that a suspect had fled from a traffic stop in the area of Burke Station Road and Main Street, according to Fairfax County Police.

A trooper went to a residence in the 9600 block of Maury Road, which was tied to the vehicle’s registration, and was joined by two Fairfax County K-9 units. The officers saw a teenage boy near the vehicle used to flee police and called for him to stop. Instead, the teen ran off, police say.

When the trooper tackled the suspect, a struggle ensued and one shot was fired, according to state police. The suspect was then taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

No officers were injured during the apprehension of the suspect. However, police did not say whether the suspect’s injuries were caused by the gunshot.

The teen suspect is in police custody for outstanding warrants, with additional charges pending, state police said.

VSP described the suspect as "a known gang associate," who had outstanding warrants were for a probation violation and auto larceny. Investigators are working to determine whether the suspect was authorized to drive the vehicle.
