Buy Nothing Day is Friday

Some local residents will be sleeping in and spending time with family and friends on Black Friday as a way of celebrating "Buy Nothing Day."

Buy Nothing Day, like Black Friday, is traditionally the day after Thanksgiving—but instead of shopping at 4 a.m. (or earlier) in an effort to get good deals, some residents are staying home and spending time with their families Friday.

One person on the Kingstowne-Rose Hill Patch Facebook page said, "There is nothing I need that badly to make me fight the crazy Black Friday crowds! I plan on staying in my jammies on the couch in a turkey-induced coma."

Another person commented she plans to spend this weekend with family and friends. "No Black Friday sales for my family!"

Buy Nothing Day started in the early 1990s, but only moved to the day after Thanksgiving a few years later.

“Until we challenge the entrenched values of capitalism—that the economy must always keep growing, that consumer wants must always be satisfied, that immediate gratification is imperative—we’re not going able to fix the gigantic psycho-financial-eco crisis of our times,” according to AdBusters, which promotes the day annually and this year is pushing the hashtag #OccupyXmas on Twitter.

“This November 23rd, go cold turkey on consumption for 24 hours … see what happens … you just might have an unexpected, emancipatory epiphany!”
