ALEXANDRIA, VA — Second boosters of the COVID-19 vaccine are now available at Giant Food pharmacies in Alexandria and elsewhere, the grocery store chain announced Wednesday.

Those eligible for a second booster dose are people 50 or older and individuals who are moderately to severely immunocompromised. The second booster can be given at least four months after the first booster of a Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. Eligibility for a second booster had been recommended by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention in March. According to the CDC, the recommendation is based on increased risk of severe illness in eligible groups, including people over the age of 50 with multiple underlying conditions.

Residents are encouraged to visit a Giant pharmacy by walk-in or appointment. A health insurance card, driver's license and vaccination card are requested at the visit.
