KINGSTOWNE, VA — New Year's Day is on a Sunday this year, meaning that most Fairfax County offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 2 to celebrate the holiday.

Fairfax County government will be closed on Monday, Jan. 2. Other services have schedule changes on New Year's weekend.

Below are the openings and closures to know for the New Year's holiday around Kingstowne:

Fairfax County government offices: Closed Monday, Jan. 2.

Fairfax County Public Schools: Winter break runs through Monday, Jan. 2. Students return to school on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Courts: Fairfax County Circuit Court and General District Court will be closed Monday, Jan. 2.

Department of Motor Vehicles: All DMV customer service centers will be closed Monday, Jan. 2.

Libraries: All Fairfax County Public Library branches will be open Saturday, Dec. 31 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. They will be closed Sunday, Jan. 1 and Monday, Jan. 2.

Animal Shelter: The Fairfax County Animal Shelter will be open on Saturday, Dec. 31 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The animal shelter will be closed on Sunday, Jan. 1 and Monday, Jan. 2.

Metrorail: Operating hours on Saturday, Dec. 31, will be extended until 2 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 1. All trips will be free for riders entering after 8 p.m. Saturday. Will operate from 7 a.m. to midnight on Sunday, Jan. 1, and Monday, Jan. 2.

Metrobus: Operating hours on Saturday, Dec. 31, will be extended until 2 a.m. Sunday. All trips will be free for riders after 8 p.m. on Saturday. Will operate on its Sunday schedule on Sunday, Jan. 1, and Monday, Jan. 2.

Fairfax Connector: Fairfax Connector will have Sunday service on Monday, Jan. 2. For more information, visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector.

Post offices: Closed on Monday, Jan. 2.

Recreation centers: Fairfax County recreation centers are open regular hours on Saturday, Dec. 31. All recreation centers will be closed on Sunday, Jan. 1.

Parks: The Hidden Pond Nature Center and Green Spring Gardens will be open on Saturday, Dec. 21 and closed on Sunday, Jan. 1.

Trash and recycling: Fairfax County collection customers will not have collection services on Sunday, Jan. 1. Private collection customers should check with their hauler for any changes.

Trash and recycling centers: The Recycling and Disposal Centers at the I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Road) and the I-95 Landfill Complex (9850 Furnace Road) will close at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31 and will be closed on Sunday, Jan. 1.
