Here are the top three stories today in Lynchburg:

  1. Lynchburg Water Resources crews have finally repaired the water main break on Florida Avenue in Lynchburg. The break has caused the closure of a portion of Florida Avenue between Campbell Avenue and Winston Ridge Road. The road is closed to all drivers except for access to the Food Lion shopping center. Water service is restored as well, with the roads reopened yesterday (May 18) morning. The cause of the water main break is still unknown. (WSET)
  2. Lynchburg City Schools have announced new leadership appointments for R.S. Payne Elementary and Dearington Elementary starting in the fall. Lori McVicar will become the principal of R.S. Payne Elementary, while Jason Giambrone will take over as principal of Dearington Elementary School for Innovation. McVicar, who has been the assistant principal at R.S. Payne since 2020, has demonstrated strong leadership during the pandemic. Giambrone, who has been an assistant principal at E.C. Glass High School, is known for his mentorship and commitment to equity and access for students. The new principals aim to create environments where students and staff can thrive and unlock their full potential. (WFXRtv.com)
  3. Lynchburg Police Chief Ryan Zuidema recently discussed a new tactic called "Saving Our Streets." The strategy aims to reduce crime in the community, particularly in districts where there has been a high incidence of violence. Zuidema highlighted the recent tragic deaths of three children within a three-block radius and emphasized the need to target such areas with this new approach. (WSET)
