Area Students Tour DC With NOVEC Delegation

Five area high school students sponsored by NOVEC recently joined other students in the region on the 2019 Youth Tour of Washington, D.C.

MANASSAS, VA—Five area high school students sponsored by the Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative recently joined other students in the region on the 2019 Youth Tour of Washington, D.C. NOVEC's students: Annalee Hunniford (Forest Park High School), Audrey Fisher (Kettle Run), Victoria Baker (Seton), Kiley Smith (Patriot) and Maliha Qureshi (Stonewall Jackson).

They were with around 1,800 other students from across the U.S. at the June 16-20 tour, organized by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.

According to a release, the students learned about cooperatives, toured the Capitol building and met with their congressional representatives. They also visited Arlington National Cemetery, the Pentagon, and the 9/11 Pentagon Memorial. The NOVEC group will visit Richmond in February to learn about government at the state level and meet with their representatives in the Virginia General Assembly.

"We had an exceptional group of young people on this year's tour," Andrew Vehorn, vice president of governmental affairs at the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives and Youth Tour director, said in the release. "They were enthusiastic and energetic, and even though we did our best to tire them out, they enjoyed experiences that will serve them and their cooperative communities well into the future."
