Data Center Energy Demand The Focus Of Next Prince William Co. Panel Discussion

A panel including two elected officials will examine the power demands posed by data center growth in Prince William County.

MANASSAS, VA — A civic group that hosts panel discussions on the most pressing issues in Prince William County will next turn to energy demands from data centers.

The Prince William Committee of 100 will host the Meeting the Energy Needs of Data Centers program on Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Manassas Park Community Center, 99 Adams Street, Manassas Park, VA. There is a cost to attend, but it includes a catered dinner by Chef Donnella Pearson of Let Them Eat Cake, LLC.

According to the organization, the panel of experts will discuss the challenges of supplying power to the growing number of data centers in Prince William County and surrounding localities. The discussion will also examine how power demand from data centers can be provided without service interruptions for utility rate spikes for non-data center customers.

Electricity providers NOVEC and Dominion Power have predicted more future power supply is needed to meet the demand of data centers. While Prince William County doesn't have the world's highest concentration of data centers as neighboring Loudoun County, there is significant data center development in the pipeline. One of the controversial projects in Prince William County is the Digital Gateway, a major complex with as many as 37 data centers close to Manassas National Battlefield Park. Nine residents and the nonprofit American Battlefield Trust filed a lawsuit against Prince William County supervisors' approval, and they are appealing a ruling in favor of the Digital Gateway project.

The panel will include MobileNuclear Energy CEO Chris Pehrson, state Sen. Danica Roem (D-Manassas), Supervisor Bob Weir (R-Gainesville) Dominion Energy senior vice president of corporate affairs and communications Bill Murray and Data Center Coalition director of Virginia government affairs Kate Smiley.
