Virginia Sales Tax 3-Day Holiday: Here's What Is Tax Free

Sales tax will be waived on certain items during Virginia's upcoming three-day sales tax holiday. Here's what you can buy tax-free and when.

Items from clothing and school supplies to emergency preparedness items will be sales-tax free for three days in Virginia.

For three days on the first weekend of August each year, Virginia residents can stock up on school supplies, clothing, certain appliances and other qualifying items without paying sales tax. Virginia's sales tax holiday runs from 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 1, through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 3.

The sales tax waiver applies to qualifying items bought in stores and online. Sales tax in Virginia typically ranges between 5.3 percent and 7 percent, which includes the state's 4.3 percent state sales tax, the 1 percent local option tax, and other applicable regional taxes.

The combined sales tax is 6 percent in Northern Virginia localities, which includes Alexandria, Arlington County, Fairfax City, Fairfax County, Falls Church, Loudoun County, Manassas, Manassas Park, and Prince William County.

Since 2006, sales tax holidays have been held in early August as families begin back-to-school shopping. The only recent exception was 2023, when the sales tax holiday wasn't renewed in the 2022 Appropriation Act and the 2023 budget wasn't yet approved. The sales tax holiday was instead held in October after being included in the final state budget.

Regular August sales tax holidays resumed in 2024, as the latest approved Virginia legislation extended sales tax holidays during the first weekend in August through at least August 2029.
