RESTON, VA — If you’re like many of your Reston neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.

Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.

Maintaining funding is a constant challenge for many nonprofits that fill gaps and meet other needs in the Reston area.

Here are five local nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday:

  1. Cornerstones works with a diverse network of faith-based organizations, corporate partners, donors, advocates, and volunteers who are deeply committed to strengthening families living and working along the Dulles Corridor.
  2. Restonstrong addresses the basic human beeds of sustenance and rest on neighbor at a time.
  3. Public Art Reston celebrates different voices reflecting our community, and providing opportunities to experience public art in all of Reston’s neighborhoods.
  4. Fellowship Square improves the lives of older adults and persons with disabilities in the Washington, DC metro area by providing them with affordable housing and supportive services.
  5. Cindy's Legacy provides vital financial assistance and resources to cancer patients and their families.

If you're looking for another worthy organization to donate to in the Reston area, you couldn't do better than Herndon-Reston FISH. For 55-years, the non-profit has provided emergency financial assistance to those who find themselves in a short-term crises. This includes paying rent so families don’t find themselves homeless or paying for utilities so they may stay warm. FISH also cooks meals, as well as pays for medical prescriptions and emergency dental work.
