Dangerous Heat Will Cause Illness or Injury Monday in Va., Md., D.C.

Heat advisory Monday as National Weather Service warns to avoid long periods outside, and stay in an air conditioned area.

Forecasters are warning residents to avoid spending time outdoors on Monday.

A heat advisory will be in effect from noon until 8 p.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

The heat index, or "feels like" temperature, is expected to climb to near 109 degrees, with actual temperatures in the mid-90s to around 100 degrees.

This will mean the potential for heat-related illness for those without air conditioning or those outdoors for an extended period, according to the weather service.

"Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside," according to a weather service statement. "When possible, reschedule strenuous activities for early in the morning or in the evening."

Other tips include:

  • Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke,
  • Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible, and
  • Drink plenty of water.

When working outside, schedule frequent rest breaks in a shaded or air conditioned area. Anyone overcrome by heat should be moved to a cool, shaded location.
