Heat Wave Warnings as Temperatures Soar Across Md., Va. and Much of Country

Weather forecast says dangerous temps will be here to stay for several days, as heat impacts much of the U.S.

This is not the weekend to be outside playing Pokémon Go, or doing yard work.

A heat advisory will be in effect from noon until 8 p.m. for most of the Patch communities across Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, and Maryland.

Heat index values, or the "feels like" temperature, will near 105 degrees due to high temps and dewpoints, according to the National Weather Service.

"The combination of high temperatures at high humidity will create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible," the weather service warns in a statement.

The dangerous temperatures will continue into the work week, according to forecasters.

The highest risk is for people without air conditioning or those outdoors for an extended period.

"Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside," according to the weather service. "When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening."

Other tips:

  • Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke,
  • Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible, and
  • Drink plenty of water.

Those working outdoors should schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.

"Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location," the weather service notes. "Heat stroke is an emergency — call 911.
