What's Open, Closed On New Year's Day 2026 In Reston
Various services will have changes or closures for the New Year's Day, which follows New Year's Eve events.
RESTON, VA — Reston residents will head into the new year starting with a holiday, prompting closures and schedule changes affecting government offices, schools, transit and other services.
Here are the openings and closures to know on Thursday, Jan. 1:
Reston Association Member Services: Member services will close at 2 p.m., on Wednesday, Dec. 31 and remain closed through Thursday, Jan. 1. Services reopen for regular business hours on Friday, Jan. 2.

Fairfax County government offices: Closed on Jan. 1.
Fairfax County Public Schools: Closed from Dec. 22 to Jan. 2.

ABC Stores: Virginia ABC stores will close at 8 p.m. on Dec. 31 and be open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Jan. 1.
Reston Community Center: RCC Hunter Woods is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 31 and 12 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 1. RCC Lake Anne is closed on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
Community Centers: Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services community centers, senior centers and teen centers will close at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 and be closed on Jan. 1.
Courts: Fairfax County courts are closed on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
Department of Motor Vehicles: Virginia DMV locations will be closed on Jan. 1.
Fairfax Connector: Buses will run on a Sunday schedule. The only routes that operate on Sundays are: 101, 109, 151, 152, 161, 162, 171, 310, 321, 322, 371, 401, 402, 423, 463, 467, 558, 559, 574, 605, 615, 622, 630, 642, 651, 662, 672, 721, 803, 901, 921, 924, 937, 950, 952, 954, 983, RIBS 1, RIBS 2, RIBS 3, RIBS 4 and RIBS 5.
Libraries: Fairfax County Public Library locations close at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 and are closed on Jan. 1. Richard Byrd Library is closed until further notice.
Metro: Metro will have weekday service from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 31 and weekend late night service from 6 a.m. to midnight. Fares will be free from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Dec. 31.
Post offices: Closed on Jan. 1.
Recreation centers: Open from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Jan. 1.
Trash and recycling: For Fairfax County collection customers, there are no trash collection changes on Jan. 1. If you have a private trash collector, check with them for any schedule changes. The I-66 Transfer Station and the I-95 Landfill Complex will close at 2 p.m. on Dec. 31 and be closed on Jan. 1
