Looking for something different to do to kick off your weekend? Here's a few suggestions in Alexandria and nearby.
Rock out in Waterfront Park. Bon Jovi Tribute band Living on a Bad Name rocks out in Waterfront Park at the foot of Prince Street from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Food sales of chili nachos, chili dogs, Italian ice and beverages will be available.
Geek out Alexandria-style with the Planning Commission at its retreat at police headquarters, 3600 Wheeler Ave. The commission will discuss its schedule, community outreach, committee assignments, goals and policies and perhaps most important, updates on major ongoing projects. Free, anyone may attend. 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Retail secrets for artists. Learn proven techniques on how to display, show and sell your artwork to visitors in your studio at Lorton’s Workhouse Arts Center event in the McGuire Woods Gallery W-16. The talk will be led by Mark Wilson a Small Business Development Center retail and restaurant consultant. 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Workhouse Arts Center is located just off of I-95 on Route 123, at the corner of Ox and Lorton roads.

Mongolian Mare. A statue of Sgt. Reckless will be dedicated at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Va. at 1 p.m. Sgt. Reckless was recognized as a national hero in 1954 for her service in the Korean War and went on to be awarded two Purple Hearts. She was a Mongolian mare that earned the rank of staff sergeant for transporting ammunition in battle, carrying wounded soldiers to safety and shielding them (injuries and all) from enemy fire.
