Duke Street Closures Planned For I-395 Bridge Project
Westbound and eastbound Duke Street will each be closed over several upcoming days with detours in place.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Drivers traveling on Duke Street in Alexandria should be aware of upcoming road closures, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Pavement repairs for the Duke Street bridge I-395 repair project will require three days of closure in the westbound direction and three days in the eastbound direction. Eastbound Duke Street at I-395 will be closed from 11 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7 to 11 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10. Westbound Duke Street at I-395 will be closed from 11 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14 to 11 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17.
Drivers are encouraged to find alternate routes due to delays. During the eastbound closure, a detour will be provided via southbound I-395, eastbound Edsall Road (Route 648, Exit 2A) and northbound I-395 back to eastbound Duke Street. During the westbound closure, a detour will be provided via northbound I-395, westbound Seminary Road (Exit 4) and southbound I-395 back to westbound Duke Street.

All Duke Street interchange ramps will be open during the eastbound closure. During the westbound closure, the ramp from northbound I-395 to westbound Duke Street and the ramp from westbound Duke Street to southbound I-395 will be closed.
VDOT is renovating the Duke Street bridge over I-395 to extend the bridge life and improve safety for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists. The work includes replacing the concrete bridge deck and beams, adding a shared-use path on the westbound sidewalk, and widening the eastbound sidewalk. The project is expected to be completed in winter 2023/2024.
