Duke Street Lane Closures Planned Wednesday In Alexandria

Lane closures will happen for the Duke Street bridge over Interstate 395 project Wednesday, according to VDOT.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Lane closures are planned on Duke Street Wednesday for the bridge over Interstate 395 project, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The lane closures will affect eastbound Duke Street between Oasis Drive and South Walker Street. Starting at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, the right lane of eastbound Duke Street will be closed, followed by the left lane. Around 3 p.m. eastbound traffic along the bridge will be shifted to the right until the fall. The lane closures will allow temporary striping for the traffic shift.

VDOT's project will repair the Duke Street over I-395 to extend the life of the bridge and improve safety for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians. Project components include replacing the concrete bridge deck and beams, adding a shared-use path on the westbound sidewalk, and widening the eastbound sidewalk. Construction begin in July 2021, and VDOT expects the project to be completed in the 2023-2024 winter season.
