Duke Street Lane Closures Planned This Week In Alexandria

Expect lane closures over the coming days on Duke Street over I-395 as bridge work continues.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Lane closures will be in place on three days this week for the Duke Street bridge over Interstate 395 project.

The lane closures will happen during the day Tuesday to Thursday on Duke Street between Oasis Drive and South Walker Street, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. Single lanes will be closed on eastbound and westbound Duke Street between noon and 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and 9:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.

A traffic shift will then begin, temporarily moving eastbound Duke Street lanes over I-395 over the westbound side of the bridge. The traffic shift will allow the bridge deck to be replaced on the eastbound side.

In addition, drivers on the northbound I-395 ramp to westbound Duke Street will temporarily have a stop sign instead of a yield sign at the end of the ramp. Traffic patterns are expected to last through mid-summer.

VDOT says the Duke Street bridge over I-395 project will extend the bridge life and improve safety for different road users. The bridge carries an estimated 47,000 vehicles per day.

The concrete bridge deck and beams will be replaced. For pedestrians and bicyclists, the westbound sidewalk will be upgraded to a shared-use path, and the eastbound sidewalk will be widened.

Project completion is expected in the winter 2023-2024, according to VDOT.
