Demolition of the former mall began in May after the city, developers and Inova reached an agreement to redevelop it into a mixed-use development. The West End Alexandria development will be anchored by an Inova Alexandria Hospital relocated from its Seminary Road location. Other uses will include residential, retail, commercial and entertainment uses as well as central plaza, parks and public spaces, transit hub and Alexandria Fire Department's relocated Fire Station 208.

According to the West End Alexandria development website, demolition will affect all structures on the site except the parking garage. The parking garage will undergo renovations and reopen with the project.

Demolition will be followed by rough grading of the site starting in late 2022 and infrastructure construction estimated to begin in the latter half of 2023. The first buildings are estimated to deliver in 2025. Inova hospital construction is expected from 2024 to 2028.
