Overnight Lane Closures To Affect I-395 In Alexandria

Upcoming lane closures are planned on the regular and express lanes due to Duke Street bridge work.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Overnight lane closures on Interstate 395 regular lanes and Express Lanes are coming up Friday through June 24.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, the upcoming lane closures are due to the continued Duke Street over I-395 Bridge Rehabilitation project. Express Lanes closures are planned Friday, and southbound I-395 regular lane closures will be held nightly from Sunday through Friday, June 17 and Sunday, June 19 through Friday, June 24.

On Friday, two lanes of the southbound I-395 Express Lanes between Seminary Road and Duke Street will be closed from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. Two full stoppages up to 20 minutes will happen between midnight and 2 a.m. In case of inclement weather, backup dates are Saturday night or Sunday night.

On Sunday and Monday, two regular lanes on southbound I-395 will be closed between Seminary Road and Duke Street from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. On Tuesday through Thursday, three southbound lanes will be closed between Seminary Road and Duke Street from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. On Friday, three lanes will be closed between Seminary Road and Duke Street from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. From Sunday to Wednesday, three southbound lanes will be closed between Seminary Road and Duke Street from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. On Thursday and Friday, two lanes will be closed between Seminary Road and Duke Street from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes if possible. Duke Street interchange ramps will remain open.

The Duke Street bridge over I-395 repair project is expected to be completed in winter 2023-2024. Crews are replacing the concrete bridge deck and beams, widening the eastbound sidewalk and changing the westbound sidewalk to a shared-use path. The project goals are extended the life of the bridge and improving safety for all road users, according to VDOT.
