Today in the West End: National Night Out, Science Gab, Tour Tudor Place and Get Happy with Happy Hour

Welcome to Tuesday when you can enjoy National Night Out or a night out with the Nationals.

Tuesday marks National Night Out, an initiative sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. Cities across the nation along with their neighborhood watch groups and local law enforcers celebrate crime and drug prevention. In Alexandria, residents in more than 30 neighborhoods will turn on their porch lights, host neighborhood cook-outs and sponsor block parties in support of National Night Out. The mayor, city manager, police chief and members of City Council will visit residents. McGruff the Crime Fighting Dog, K-9 Unit, Motor Unit, Bike Patrol, Command Bus, Armored Personnel Carrier and the Crime Scene Mobile Lab will tour neighborhoods and offer special demonstrations. 

Get happy at Pizzeria Paradiso. The Italian restaurant offers a happy hour Monday through Thursday evenings at its Old Town (124 King St., Alexandria, 703-837-1245) and Georgetown (3282 M St., NW, Washington 202-337-1245) locations. Happy hour is every Tuesday and Wednesday, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Dupont Circle location (2003 P St. NW Washington). Enjoy ½ price draft beers, $5 appetizers and all 8-inch pizzas on the menu for about $10.

Enjoy an evening out with Café Scientifique, organized by the Ballston Science and Technology Alliance. The group meets every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Front Page in Ballston, 4201 Wilson Blvd., 703-248-9990. The group aims to discuss science in plain English. Leave the jargon at home. Tuesday is also half-price burger night at the Front Page!

Take a tour of Tudor Place Historic House and Garden in Georgetown, 1644 31st St., NW, 202-965-0400. 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 3 to 4 p.m. There is a $10 fee, but Tudor Place is offering free admission all summer for active-duty members of the U.S. military and their families.
