Milwaukee Students Receive Scholarships In June National Merit Finals

High school seniors had to write an essay about their leadership positions and awards for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

MILWAUKEE, WI — High school seniors across the Badger State, including in Milwaukee, will receive scholarship money after the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced its winners in June.

Here is a list of Milwaukee's National Merit scholars.

  • Logan Walls, University School of Milwaukee, who may pursue a career in computer programming
  • Benjamin Doerr, Wisconsin Lutheran High School, who may pursue a career in genetics
  • Zachary Ostrand, Marquette University High School, who may pursue a career in chemical engineering

Students will receive between $500 and $2,000 every year for four years while taking undergraduate classes, the scholarship program said. When all scholarships are disbursed to 7,500 high school seniors, a total of $28 million would have been given away.

High school students earned their scholarship by submitting a detailed application, writing an essay and providing information about their extracurricular activities, awards and leadership positions, the program said.

Another round of scholars will be announced in July, the program said. By then, 4,000 high school students will receive the Merit Scholarship.
