10-Year-Old Boy's Body Found In Tunnel Recovery; 2 Adults Missing

MILWAUKEE, WI — Milwaukee fire crews found a 10-year-old boy's body in the Kinnickinnic River on Tuesday afternoon after the boy and two men were swept away in an open drainage canal on Monday evening, according to multiple reports.

Two men, who were the boy's neighbors, are still missing, WISN-12 reported. The boy was swept into the canal near South 27th Street and West Loomis Road, and two men who tried to save him were also swept in.

Officials said the search was a recovery operation, WISN-12 reported. Rescue crews paused their search Monday night due to heavy rain and returned on Tuesday around 8:30 a.m.

The Milwaukee Fire Department is searching for the adults in three drainage tunnels at the end of a ditch near South 27th Street and West Loomis Road, TMJ4 reported.

Firefighters with life jackets prepared to search the water around 10 a.m. Tuesday, CBS 58 reported.

The child falling into the water appeared to be a case of play gone wrong, Milwaukee Police Cpt. Eric Pfeiffer said at a news conference. A 34-year-old man and a 37-year-old man got into the water to try to save the child, but all three were swept away by heavy rain.

The tunnels can clog up with debris, and there is a chance the people were caught inside, Milwaukee Assistant Fire Chief DeWayne Smoots said at a news conference.
