Water Street Brewery Hops To It With Limited Release Of Cricket Stout Beer

In honor of its 30th anniversary, Water Street Brewery is releasing the beer Thursday at all four of its area locations.

Water Street Brewery is celebrating its 30th anniversary in a unique way with a Thursday release of Chocolate Covered Cricket Stout at all of its locations.

The beer is made by adding cricket flour to the mash and aged on cocoa nibs. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, brewer George Bluvas III said it tastes like "unsalted peanuts or popcorn." Bluvas personally added 15 pounds of cricket flour to the mix; that's more than 50,000 crickets.

The beer doesn't actually taste of crickets but it is served with a chocolate-covered cricket garnish. Adventurous hopheads should give the garnish a try, as Bluvas points out crickets are chock-full of nutrients, with twice the protein as beef, as much calcium as milk, and as much Vitamin B12 as salmon.
