Two critically injured, hospitalized after head-on collision in Huntsville (waff.com) — Two people are in critical condition after a head-on crash around 12:41 a.m. Sunday at Governors Drive and Cass Circle in Huntsville. Police say one driver appears to have crossed into oncoming traffic; the Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating and potential charges are pending.
   

2. Seniors losing Medicare fitness benefit — Madison County offers free programs (waff.com) — Huntsville seniors on Medicare through Blue Cross Blue Shield will lose a key fitness benefit next week, but Studio 60 Senior Center in Huntsville is stepping up with free memberships for Madison County residents 60 and older. The center runs largely on volunteers, is upgrading its exercise equipment by the end of January, and offers a practical alternative for those losing discounted gym access.
   

3. Flu season in Alabama spiked early and cases are doubling (waff.com) — Flu cases are rising fast in Alabama, with a Huntsville family physician warning that infections have already doubled and urging residents to avoid the ER unless seriously ill. Instead, he recommends seeing a primary care doctor, getting a flu shot, and staying home when sick. Recent state data show flu-positive ER visits more than doubled around Christmas, and doctors expect further increases.
   

4. UAH Cybersecurity Center Opens Applications for DoD Scholarships (rswebsols.com) — Students in Huntsville interested in cybersecurity careers can now apply for generous federal-backed scholarships through UAH’s Centre for Cybersecurity Research and Education, covering full tuition plus substantial stipends. The CyberCorps: Scholarship for Service and DoD Cyber Service Academy both require federal internships and post-graduation service, with applications due digitally by 10:59 p.m. on January 28.
   

5. Gov. Kay Ivey Awards $43.8 Million in Energy Assistance Grants for Low-Income Alabama Households (calhounjournal.com) — Low-income households in Huntsville and Madison County can soon apply for help paying power bills, thanks to nearly $2.9 million directed to the Community Action Partnership of Huntsville/Madison and Limestone Counties. Part of a $43.8 million statewide LIHEAP package, the funds will support heating and cooling costs, especially for seniors, people with disabilities, and families with children. Residents must contact the local agency for eligibility and application dates.
