10-Foot Waves, Dangerous Surf Conditions Expected In Carlsbad

The National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory because dangerous swimming and surfing conditions are expected along the coast.

CARLSBAD, CA — Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions are expected to return to the San Diego County coastline this week, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a high surf advisory for the coastal areas.

A high surf advisory will be in effect from 2 a.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Saturday for the county's coastal areas, including Carlsbad, according to the NWS. The advisory was issued alongside a flood watch that will be in effect from 6 a.m. Thursday to 10 a.m. Friday, as well as a wind advisory that will be in effect from 4 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday.

Large breaking waves of 5 to 8 feet are expected, with sets up to 10 feet, according to the NWS. The surf will peak late Thursday into Friday before gradually lowering Friday night and Saturday.

Forecasters warned of dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion.

"Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous conditions," the NWS said in a statement.
