Low Pressure System To Bring Bone-Chilling Temperatures To Carlsbad

CARLSBAD, CA — High winds, rain and mountain snow are predicted for San Diego and the surrounding communities today into Wednesday, but Carlsbad will likely see some of the coldest temperatures so far this year over the next two nights.

Lows Tuesday night are predicted to just above freezing at 33 degrees and overnight low temperatures through early Thursday morning are expected to dip even further.

Low temperatures Wednesday night is expected to drop to a bone-chilling 30 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

To add insult to injury, the area is under a wind advisory from 2 to 10 p.m. today. With northwest winds blowing 15-25 miles per hour and gusts up to 4o mph predicted, the winds will make those chilly temperatures feel even colder, NWS said.

The dropping temperatures, rain and even mountain snow prompted the San Diego Housing Commission to activate the Inclement Weather Shelter Program for the second day in a row for San Diegans experiencing homelessness.

The commission calls for Inclement Weather Shelters to open when the temperature is 50 degrees or below and there is a 40 percent chance of rain; the temperature is 45 degrees or below regardless of a chance of rain; or in exceptional weather conditions, such as one or more inches of rain within 24 hours and sustained high winds.

While the area should see closer to normal temperatures by the end of the week, another cold low-pressure system from the northwest is being watched for next week and could hit the region by early next week, the NWS said.
