CARLSBAD, CA — The Front Porch Gallery in Carlsbad is celebrating its 20th anniversary with its ongoing "Save the Ocean 5" Art and Poetry Exhibit.

The exhibit is free and open to the public through May 28 at the gallery located at 2903 Carlsbad Boulevard. It is presented in association with the Surfing Madonna Oceans Project.

Front Porch Gallery has been a center of the Carlsbad artistic community since April 2, 2005. Director Cathey Carey has added high-quality exhibits to the show, which explores what owners call "urgent environmental themes, climate change, expressions of beauty, and the rejuvenation of the spirit that can be found in nature."

This year, the gallery juried in artists and poets for the show centered around a shared commitment to environmental stewardship. Artists incorporated their love of the ocean, created works from found objects, trash, driftwood, and sparkling stones, as well as oils, fabrics, and clay.

Some of the favorites that caught our eye included Scarlet, the killer whale quilted by fabric artist Talitha Lionheart.

Another artist uses driftwood to create a creature that soars over the waves rather than through them. View this falcon made of driftwood, by artist Mark Stogsdill.

The exhibits are even better up close.

“By showcasing the diverse perspectives of these creatives, Front Porch Gallery hopes to inspire viewers and participants to have meaningful discussions about environmental degradation and how the ocean can provide a place of beauty, solace, and rejuvenation for the next twenty years to come,” said Carey.

The Surfing Madonna Oceans Project shared a statement on the fifth edition of the exhibit, which is the second collaboration between Front Porch Gallery and the Surfing Madonna Oceans Project.

"Over 100 Artists and poets have come together to express their concerns, emotions, and hopes for the future of our planet, offering creative solutions and insightful commentary through a variety of mediums," they wrote. "Works featured in the exhibition will focus on themes such as ocean conservation, marine life preservation, and the broader environmental challenges facing our world today."
