Sheriff's Department Ends Investigation Into Alleged Peeping Suspect

Detectives discovered during their investigation that the man is non-verbal and has the mental capacity of a child.

SAN MARCOS, CA — The investigation into a man suspected of a peeping incident in San Marcos has ended after detectives discovered he is a dependant adult who has been diagnosed with autism and has the mental capacity of a child, authorities announced Thursday.

A witness recognized the man from a news release issued Wednesday and contacted deputies, according to Detective Lavinia Fifita of the San Marcos Sheriff's Station.

Detectives discovered during their investigation that the man is autistic and attends a North County adult day care program, verifying the information with the man's mother.

"She confirmed her son has autism, is non-verbal, and has the mental capacity of a child," Fifita said in a statement.

Investigators conveyed the information to the woman who reported she was the victim of the March 28 incident, Fifita said.

The woman told the investigators that she felt at ease that they could identify the man and that she did not want to continue seeking prosecution.
