Attempted Murder Suspect Identified, Recovering from Injuries

A Hayward man who is recovering after being shot at by police and bitten by a K-9 unit, The Daily Review reports.

Leonard Collins, 39, has not been booked because he is still are being treated for injuries at Sgt. JD Nelson of Alameda County Sheriff's Office told The Daily Review. He is expected to survive.

Nelson said deputies tried to contact Collins at a home near the intersection of Grove Way and Queen Street on Tuesday afternoon. He then ran into a black Honda and drove toward deputies, who then opened fire.

After crossing over Interstate 580, Collins got out of his car and hopped a backyard fence and hid under a deck at a residence on the 20600 block of Center Street.

A police dog was sent into the yard, which ended up biting Collins, who then had to be transported to the hospital for gunshot wounds and dog bites.

Collins is suspected of shooting a woman through the door of a home in Ashland about a month ago, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The man also led officers on a car chase from Alameda to Oakland Airport a few weeks ago, according to the Contra Costa Times. He was driving up to 90 mph the wrong way on Airport Drive, when authorities chose to end the pursuit for public safety.
