California Wildfires Death Toll Climbs To 43

A teenage girl died this week from her injuries stemming from the wildfires.

MENDOCINO COUNTY, CA -- A teenage girl who was injured in the California wildfires died this week, making the total number of deaths 43.

Kressa Shepherd, 17, died on Sunday in a Sacramento County hospital, according to a Reuters report.

Shepherd "was declared brain dead after undergoing surgery" and suffered from cardiac arrest. She was from Redwood Valley where she was caught in the fire, according to the report.

The four Northern California wildfires, which are expected to be contained this week, burned tens of thousands of acres and destroyed or damaged more than 7,000 structures.

Earlier this month, the state insurance commissioner estimated the damages to cost more than $1 billion.
