Healdsburg Resident Launching Kickstarter Campaign for 'Sufferfests' Documentary

'The Rise of the Sufferfests' is a forthcoming documentary by Healdsburg resident Scott Keneally.

Ever wonder why people pay good money to run through the mud, be electrocuted and snag their clothing on barbed wire?

Healdsburg resident Scott Keneally is producing a documentary to examine the explosive popularity of obstacle races, and will host a party Tuesday night to launch a Kickstarter campaign to crowd-fund it.

"You don’t need to see Matt Lauer crawling under barbed wire on the Today Show to know that obstacle racing is smack in the center of the zeitgeist," Kenealy writes in a Facebook event post. "In 2013, nearly 4 million people will shell out upwards of one billion dollars to suffer through ice, fire, electricity barbed wire, and mud. So it was only a matter of time before someone made a documentary about this odd phenomenon."

Tuesday's event will feature the debut of a teaser trailer for the documentary, "Rise of the Sufferfests," and will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at h2hotel, 219 Healdsburg Ave. Admission is free, and SF Gate columnist Mark Morford is scheduled to attend.
