President Barack Obama has pledged to take action on climate change during his second term in office, saying the U.S. must be a leader in a global transition toward the use of sustainable energy.

The remarks came from Obama's inauguration address, delivered Monday morning outside the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C.

Citing the effects of "more powerful storms" and "crippling drought," Obama continued: "We cannot cede to other nations the technology that will power new jobs and new industries—we must claim its promise. That is how we will maintain our economic vitality and our national treasure—our forests and waterways; our croplands and snowcapped peaks."
