Update: Man Succumbs to Injuries From Healdsburg Apartment Fire

Update 5:47 p.m., Sunday: The Press Democrat reports that the cause of the fire is a flash fire that erupted when the man, identified as 34-year-old Troy Voelkel, was lighting a stove.

“It appeared that (he) was attempting to light the stove and a flash fire occurred, catching (his) clothes on fire,” Sonoma County Fire Chief Mark Aston told the paper Sunday.

Update 9:44 a.m., Sunday: The man who was severely burned during a Saturday morning apartment fire has died from his injuries according to a report published in the Press Democrat.

The man,Troy Voelkel, 34, of Healdsburg sustained second- and -third degree burns over his body in the fire that took place at his apartment in the area of West Grant Street and Kinley Drive.

Firefighters found Voelkel lying outside his home and transported him to U.C. Davis Medical Center, where he died about 12 hours later, according to the story.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

One person was airlifted to the burn center at the University of California at Davis after being injured in an apartment fire in Healdsburg this morning, a fire marshal said.

The fire was reported at about 9 a.m. in the area of West Grant Street and Kinley Drive, according to fire Marshal Linda Collister.

When the Healdsburg Fire Department arrived to the single-story structure fire, the victim was outside with second- and third-degree burns.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Other fire departments from around the area assisted with the blaze.
