Ramona is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Ramona has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • Ramona is home to a unique hiking destination: Potato Chip Rock. Hikers can take the Mt. Woodson Trail — 7.4 miles out and back — to see the famed one-of-a-kind rock cliff that looks like everyone’s beloved snack.
  • Chock full of aviation history, Ramona’s airport was built in 1943 by the U.S. Navy. Today, the Ramona Air Attack Base, operated by CAL FIRE San Diego Unit and the U.S. Forest Service, responds to an average of 450 forest fire calls a year.
  • Ramona’s old town Main Street is home to the historic Verlaque House dating back to 1886. Home to French immigrant Theophile Verlaque, the house — now home to the Guy B. Woodward Museum — is an example of traditional French Provincial architecture.
  • The equestrian community is large in Ramona. Businesses are equipped with hitching posts, the Ramona Grasslands Cunty Preserve is known as a great horseback riding trail and residents look forward to the annual Ramona Rodeo.
  • Ramona wasn’t always named after the popular 1884 novel written by Helen Hunt Jackson. The town was originally called “Nuevo” up until 1886.
