- As the San Diego Unified School District board considers a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for all eligible employees and students, members of the public will be able to share their thoughts. The proposal would require all eligible staff, employees, contractors, partners and students to be fully vaccinated by December 20 — whole phasing in younger children as they get cleared for vaccination. Although the meeting tonight is via Zoom, the public is invited to submit their comments online.(NBC 7 San Diego)
- On Monday, the Drug Enforcement Administration issued its first public safety alert in six years regarding counterfeit prescription drugs. Around 700,000 fake pills have been seized in the San Diego area in the past 90 days, with 45% of them containing lethal doses of fentanyl. Thats around 300,000 pills that would kill whoever takes it. The DEA has issues similar warning before, but never has it ever seen such mass amounts of chemicals making it across the San Diego border. (FOX 5 San Diego)
- Gov. Gavin Newsom signed new legislation that makes voting by mail a permanent fixture in the state's future elections. Voting by mail became essential during the pandemic, but many feel it eased voting access overall — contributing to greater voter turnout even during the pandemic. The new law will take effect in January and will begin with elections, even local elections, in June and November. California is the eight state to mandate that every voter is mailed a ballot. - After creating the first synthetic bacteria cell in 2016, Synthetic Genomics is changing its name to highlight its focus on environmental sustainability. The newly dubbed Viridos takes its name from the Latin meaning green and fresh. Viridos aims to use its genomic expertise and algae biofuel technology to address climate change, we well as help industries act more sustainably. (Times of San Diego)

- Schools across San Diego County report hundreds of kids — from elementary school to high school — to the police every year. Black students and students with disabilities make up 19% and 30% of police referrals, respectively despite accounting for minor amounts of the total population. Of San Diego Unifies School District's referrals, 10% were for children in elementary school. Although schools are trying to keep students safe, many referrals are being questioned for the effects they might have on children.
