Sycamore Hills Courts Get a Makeover

The town of Avon recently completed upgrades to the basketball and tennis courts with funding from the Capital Improvement Program.

The town basketball and tennis courts at Sycamore Hills reopened Oct. 18 with a fresh blue and green look thanks to a boost from the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) budget.

The town provided $40,000 in funding for replacing the basketball "standard poles," "backboards," "rims" and "padding" with "newer units," repairing tennis court fencing and sealing cracks on the courts, repainting the courts and adding "new lines," Glenn Marston, Avon Recreation and Parks director, wrote in an email to Patch.

"The upgrades were necessary maintenance," Marston said. "The feedback is just coming in, but all favorable. The basketball standard replacement was referred to as 'awesome' by some players I encountered at Sycamore."

The courts are used for lessons, adult leagues and free play and are the most packed in the spring and summer, Marston said.

The CIP budget approved within the overall town of Avon 2013-14 budget last May paid for the maintenance, according to Town Council Chairman Mark Zacchio (R), one of the council candidates running for re-election this fall.

Marston, who oversaw the long-term planning for the needed court maintenance, said that the projects were "part of the 1-5 year CIP program, actually put off two years for other priorities, but done without consequence."

Public Works Director Bruce Williams oversaw the bidding process and construction, Marston said.

Vermont Recreational Surfacing & Fencing, Inc. of Barnet, VT did the renovations. That's the same contractor that did the upgrades to the Avon Middle School and Thompson Brook School tennis courts.
