Memorial Day In Berlin: Parade Steps Off Monday, Facilities Closed

Memorial Day is a solemn mix of remembering U.S. soldiers killed in the line of duty and enjoying the unofficial start of the summer season.

BERLIN, CT — The unofficial start of summer kicks off in Berlin this weekend with a mix of seasonal fun and solemn remembrances of Memorial Day Weekend's true meaning.

All town offices and schools are closed for the day on Monday, May 26, with Berlin hosting its annual Memorial Day Parade that day.

This year’s Memorial Day Parade will start at 9 a,n, at St. Paul’s Church on Peck Street, Kensington.

The parade route will go down Farmington Avenue, turning left onto Massirio Drive, passing the Berlin Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10732.

It then takes a left onto Veterans Way and ends at the Berlin Veterans Memorial Park, where a Memorial Day Ceremony will take place between 9:45 and 10:05 a.m.

This year’s guest speaker is Patricia Parry, president of Connecticut Gold Star Mothers, who lost a son in 2011 while he was serving as a Navy SEAL in Afghanistan.

In the event of rain, the Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 10732, 152 Massirio Drive, Berlin, CT 06037 at 9 a.m.

While parades and ceremonies mark the commemoration of Memorial Day, it also means closures and impacts on town services.

All Town of Berlin departments and schools will be closed on Monday, May 26, in observance of Memorial Day.

As a result, there will be no trash/recycling on Monday, May 26, with trash/recycling picked up one day later.
