The Friday morning crash closed the highway for much of the day on Monday and involved two other vehicles.

FARMINGTON, CT — A New York man was struck and killed on Interstate 84 in Farmington on Monday morning, after he exited his vehicle while parked on the shoulder.

According to Connecticut State Police, the accident — which, ultimately, involved three vehicles — happened on I-84 East in Farmington at about 9:12 a.m.

Police identified the man killed as Adam M. Peppe, 34, of Brewster, N.Y., who died after he was struck by a vehicle after exiting his car on the highway shoulder.

According to a state police accident report released late Monday afternoon, Peppe's vehicle, a 2021 Nissan RGE, was parked on the side of I-84 East in the shoulder just before Exit 37.

In addition, police said, a 2021 Kenworth construction truck owned by Pioneer Valley Concrete Service Inc. out of Chicopee, Mass., was also parked behind Peppe's vehicle.

Like Peppe, police said, the operator of the truck, a 42-year-old man from Westfield, Mass., was also outside his vehicle.

According to state police, "for an unknown reason," a 2016 Ram Promaster 2500 van operated by a 35-year-old Terryville man and owned by Bozzuto's Inc. out of Cheshire veered off the highway into the shoulder.

The Ram then struck Peppe and the driver of the truck, causing life-threatening injuries to Peppe and minor injuries to the truck driver, police said.

After hitting the two motorists and their vehicles, the Ram came to an uncontrolled rest in the shoulder, police said.

Peppe was rushed to the UConn Medical Center in Farmington, where police said he was pronounced dead.

The truck driver was taken to Hartford Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The driver of the van was treated for suspected minor injuries at the scene by emergency medical services personnel.

A passenger in Peppe's Nissan, an 8-year-old girl, was not injured in the incident.
