GLASTONBURY, CT β€” The Main Street reconstruction project in Glastonbury is moving along as the calendar moves toward September.

Municipal officials said that, over coming weeks, work will continue on the west side of the road and progress from north to south. Crews are currently resetting curbing in front of the Welles Turner Memorial Library, which will ultimately allow for wider, "cyclist-friendly" shoulder widths while maintaining the existing on-street parking.

Brick "snow shelf" work will follow in the same area and then continue in a southerly direction until the entirety of the undulating brick area is replaced with a "brick surfaced construction," officials said.

"This will provide durability and will be resistant to development of elevation variations," town officials said.

During the work, portions of the sidewalk will be temporarily closed and work crews will coordinate the project to make sure the sidewalk remains open on the opposing side of the road as possible for "pedestrian convenience," town officials said.

The project is expected to extend into early October.

Milling work is anticipated to begin the week of Sept. 22, and subsequent paving is likely begin immediately following the week of Sept. 29, town officials said. Milling and paving operations will be limited to night-time hours with detours instituted as necessary, town officials said.

"As always, this schedule is subject to change based on weather and other factors," officials said. "For the safety of all, please travel slowly and cautiously through the work zone."
