Time Machine Tuesday: Old Images Of South Windsor
A look back at a page from a South Windsor high school yearbook of the past.

SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — Today is the revival of our old periodic Picture South Windsor series, but with some modifications. This column will feature a photo of a non-existent South Windsor business or landmark, as shown in the pages of the local high school yearbook.
Today's look back stretches all the way to 1961, when South Windsor High School was not yet South Windsor High School. At the time, South Windsor and East Windsor shared a high school, Ellsworth, located on Main Street. A few years ago, the East Windsor Historical Society had the Ellsworth yearbooks digitized, and granted Patch permission to publish excerpts.
This advertisement in the Ellsworthian came from Boxer's Poultry Farm at 945 Ellington Road. As the name implies, the farm sold chickens. As their ad specified, they sold "broilers, roasters, parts, fryers, turkeys, eggs, capons [and] bar-b-q chickens."

The original ad is shown below, with the classic early 1960s phone number, JA-88466.
It is uncertain when the farm ceased operations, but according to South Windsor property records, the town took over the 9.5 acres of land in 1994 and designated it as open space. It sits adjacent to Vintons Millpond and Whaples Brook.
